20/10/2005 OK. This news section is turning into a media scrapbook - but we are
thrilled to get featured in the latest BRW under the heading Innovation -
What's Next! Little box office "A smart and simple new idea in DVD rental is catching on
in Sydney. Di Venuto, 25, and Joyce, 26 have plans to expand to Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane. They want to take on the conventional DVD rental industry" ... "which is dominated by franchises such as Video Ezy and Blockbuster Video. The pair say that understanding consumer habits has helped them succeed where others have failed in Australia. They first heard of DVD vending machines when a French friend, who said they were common in Western Europe, asked why Australia did not have them." "The human face is imperative," Di Venuto says.
"It is not like an ATM machine. People want to experience a cool store and
watch trailers and chat with friends." In Red Room stores, a staff member
sits at a table to chat with customers and help explain the machines. Users
can search for a specific title or browse by genre or new release, then
swipe a credit card or a store rental card and collect their DVD from a
central vending machine. Rental is $4.95 a day or $2.95 for six hours." University graduates in business, economics and law, Di
Venuto and Joyce were set for careers in finance. Joyce had started working
for Macquarie Bank's mergers and acquisitions team, and Di Venuto won his
university medal for business." |

10/08/2005 Red Room DVD has been featured in the latest monthly newsletter of the
world's fastest growing trend agency - TRENDWATCHING.COM
(http://www.trendwatching.com/newsletter/newsletter.html) If you're Blockbuster, your offline HYGIENIA benchmark should be redroomdvd in Sydney (until you really become obsolete, thanks to Netflix and BitTorrent). Broadband-challenged customers can browse redroomdvd's selection in 24/7 interactive movie stations, watch trailers, access stills and read reviews of their selected movie before deciding to rent it (for as little as 6 hours). The DVDs of choice are then ejected from a dispensing podium. Not hard to see how this will become the minimum in service and choice levels if you insist on doing things offline. |
05/08/2005 The world's hottest DVD rental store opened in Bondi Juction tonight. Just like all Red Rooms, Bondi Junction has interactive browsing, reviews, trailers, the cheapest DVD rental rates available and thousands of DVDs to choose from... all 24 / 7. Hope to see all you Sydney easterners instore soon! |
03/07/2005 Sunday Life magazine featured Red Room DVD in 'Filter' on Sunday July 3.
Sunday Life is distributed in the Sunday Herald in Sydney and The Age in
Melbourne and has readership of 1.5 million Australians. MOVIES IN A MINUTE Red Room DVD, the brainchild of Sydney entrepreneurs Dan Joyce and Nic DiVenuto, is an interactive DVD rental library. Browsing stations allow you to peruse the entire store's selection by new release, actor or genre. You can watch trailers, access pictures and read reviews of your movie. Then you simply swipe your Red Room card and the DVD is ejected. The cost? A new release costs $5 for 24 hours and $3 if its back in six. Red Room DVD is in Waterloo, Sydney, with Bondi Junction and World Square outlets to follow. Expansion to Melbourne is planned by the end of the year. |
30/06/2005 Red Room DVD has been featured by The Cool Hunter at
www.thecoolhunter.net. DVD KILLED THE VIDEO STORE That is exactly what the unique DVD rental concept stores, Red Room DVD, have done - but in an interactive, entertaining and revolutionary way. The brainchild of Sydney entrepreneurs Dan Joyce and Nic DiVenuto, the Red Room is a DVD rental store come interactive library. Rather than prowling meters of shelves and pacing back and forth along the aisles, Red Room DVD has created interactive movie stations which are equipped with touch screens. The stations allow you to peruse the entire store's selection by new release or genre categories, locating your exact search within seconds (or browsing for hours). Once located, you can watch the trailer, access pictures and read critics reviews of your selected movie before you choose to rent it. The DVD is then ejected from a dispensing podium into your fingertips! The best is yet to come, there are no 'due' dates - which means no late fees! And you can rent a movie for as little as 6 hours. Your Red Room membership card (which can be charged with credit at the store) is swiped through the dispensing podium and registers the rental fee when you return the DVD. The dispensing podium doubles as the cashier! With interactive stations that let you browse, rent and return DVDs located outside of the store, you will never miss closing time again. These 24/7 stations allow you to rent that insomnia curing movie at 3am, or return a movie at a time that's convenient to you. More insane still, you can search and reserve movies through their website, www.redroomdvd.com. Red Room DVD has totally reinvented the way we hire movies by entertaining us throughout the movie picking process. The first Red Room store has just opened in Waterloo (cnr Bourke St and Potter St) and stores are currently opening all over Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. |
27/06/2005 Red Room Bondi Junction is looking hot and is set to tear down the red window covers in mid July. We are nestled on the corner of Bronte Rd and Ebley St just up from Eastgate (opposite the Cock'n'Bull Hotel and next to USA Nails - Texas Chainsaw Massacre while having a manicure?). There is even a driveway next to us, which will make it easy to return those DVDs. We'll keep you posted with more details closer to opening day... |
30/05/2005 Pop the Veuve. After two years of planning, the first Red Room DVD opened its doors in Waterloo today. We are located on the corner of Bourke St and Potter St in Waterloo, just behind the huge Toyota/Lexus dealership on Bourke. There is plenty of parking and we have a huge selection and depth of titles (of course). If you are not near Waterloo, rest assured that there are plenty of outlets opening in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in the coming months. Hope to see you instore soon. |
